The Deal 02

THE WHOLE SHOP.
ALL THE TIME.

Show up. Work on your thing. Repeat.
On your own schedule and timeframe. The shop and equipment are available whenever the building is open. Which is always.

If you need a hand with tools, equipment, or techniques, someone's usually around the shop or reachable through our community Slack channels.

Some of our members even keep regular schedules at the shop because they love to teach, like Don, a retired engineer and senior member (in more ways than one.) He knows practically every machine in the building, helping first and long-time members alike with their renderings, carves, cuts, and prints. He even keeps his schedule and phone number posted in the office.

10BitWorks members range from first-timers to people who've been here fifteen years. Most days you'd never guess which is which.

Some equipment requires orientation/training before use.

FIELD NOTE 03

"

I joined to use the CNC. I'd never touched one. Members who knew the machine walked me through it. Three years later, I'm the one walking the next person through.

STRAIGHT TALK 04

WHAT YOU'LL BRING.

The tools are here. What makes membership work is what you bring through the door.

Curiosity is the baseline. You don't need skills when you walk in. You need to want to figure something out. That, and generosity are what the shop runs on.

Flexibility goes a long way. The specific machine you're after might be in use when you show up. Work on something else, offer help, or pull up a stool and learn. Just don't pester people, we've all got work to do.

Team spirit isn't optional, but it's not hard either. Leave things ready for the next person, replenish what you use, and generally act like your parents are watching. Mostly people do, anyway.

A few honest resets before you sign up:

Consumables (blades, bits, sandpaper, fasteners, filament) are usually stocked for normal use. Heavy users replenish what they use.

Things break sometimes. Whoever breaks something normally repairs it or replaces it. No service contract. No replacement fairy.

You're not buying a service. You're joining a community and a shared shop, on the terms they run on.

HOW IT WORKS 05

DUES. DONATIONS. MEMBERS.

We're a Texas 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Members, the volunteer board, and a steady stream of donations keep the lights on and the equipment running.

Your dues go toward the boring necessities: rent, utilities, insurance, and some consumables stocked for normal use. They don't pay for the equipment. Almost everything in the shop was donated or bought with proceeds from selling donations. That pipeline is how the place keeps growing.

The minimum dues keep things running. If you can sustain a bit more, it helps us do more to expand.

Membership TIERS 06

SAME SHOP. Three DOORS.

Thee basic tiers. Pick based on who's joining and how you'll use the shop.

We run membership dues and donations through Open Collective, a platform that makes every transaction publicly visible. That's by design, and it's how we stay accountable to the people who fund us. When you sign up, you'll have the option to leave a small tip that covers the platform fee, which means your full dues land in the shop rather than in a payment processor.

MAKER TIER

$75/mo

One member. Full shop access, 24/7. After orientation, the card is yours. What you make with it is up to you.

START YOUR MEMBERSHIP

Household TIER

$120/mo

Two or more people at the same address. One shared access card. Each person completes their own orientation before using the equipment.

Entrepreneur TIER

$150/mo

Running a business out of the shop? If you sell products made here, or using the tools as your manufacturing space, this is your tier.

Businesses use more consumables and puts more wear on the machines. The extra cost helps cover what your projects take out of the shop.

If you have to ask whether you need to be on Entrepreneur tier, you probably do. We'd rather you ask than guess.

BEYOND THE TIERS 07

WHEN ONE TIER ISN'T ENOUGH.

Companies, teams, and organizations may want to set up a specific arrangement outside of our standard tiers that allows shared access for multiple people. If this describes you, reach out to start the conversation with our board.
