CODE OF CONDUCT 01

HOW THINGS
RUN HERE.

The shop runs because members take care of it: the space, the tools, and each other. These aren't rules imposed from outside. They're the terms the community has agreed to so the place keeps working for everyone who walks in.

RESPECT 02

TREAT PEOPLE LIKE PEOPLE.

01

Mutual respect:

Treat all members and guests with patience and courtesy. Value the time and effort of others, especially when they're sharing knowledge or offering help.

02

Acknowledge boundaries:

If a member raises a concern about your behavior or work practices, be receptive. Respect personal space and individual working styles. Some members prefer to work independently; that's their call to make.

03

No Harassment:

Intimidation, bullying, and harassment — including sexual harassment — will not be tolerated. Any threat of physical violence to persons or property is grounds for suspension or dismissal.

04

Community ownership:

Member spaces are maintained for everyone's use. No private appropriation of shared materials. No hoarding.

SAFETY 03

Don't take risks.

01

Safety first.

If you're unsure about a course of action, ask another member or a board member before proceeding. When in doubt, stop.

02

Tool authorization.

Only operate tools you're qualified and competent to use. If you experience an injury using a tool, contact the 10BitWorks board so we can improve our safety training.

03

Work area awareness.

Pay attention to all equipment and moving parts around you. Never leave machines running unattended.

04

PPE.

Wear appropriate eye and ear protection in designated areas, and whatever else the work calls for.

05

Footwear.

Closed-toed shoes required at all times in the shop. No exceptions during regular operations. (Sanctioned events like game nights may differ.)

06

Clothing and jewelry.

Secure loose clothing, long hair, and watches before operating machinery.

PROHIBITED 04

Short list. Hard stops.

01

Any use of drugs or alcohol that endangers members or guests is prohibited.

02

No smoking or vaping indoors.

03

No using the space as a domicile.

04

No eating or drinking near equipment.

CLEANLINESS 05

Leave it better than you found it.

01

The rule of thumb: leave your work area cleaner than you found it.

02

Keeping the space clean is everyone's responsibility, not someone else's.

03

Put tools back where you found them, as organized as possible.

04

Clean up spills immediately. Wet floors are a hazard.

05

Caustic and flammable materials must be labeled and stored per OSHA guidelines.

06

Unusual trash, anything that doesn't fit a standard bin, goes to the outside dumpster, or you take it with you.

06

If you leave a mess, you may be asked to return and clean it up, or to put in community service time at the space.

06

Budget time for cleanup during every visit. It's part of the job.

06

Overnight projects:

Put them safely out of the way and leave a note with your name, the date the project will be done, and your phone number.

TOOLS 06

Know what you're running.

01

If a piece of equipment is broken,

unplug it and email us immediately. Do not attempt repairs unless you're certain the fix will leave the equipment as good or better than before.

02

Don't take risks.

If you're unsure about a course of action, ask another member first.

03

Do not

leave machines running unattended.

04

Do not

attempt to stop running equipment with any part of your body. Use the power switch or unplug it.

05

Before each use:

familiarize yourself with the emergency stop procedure for that machine. Test it if you haven't used the machine recently.

06

Be aware

of all equipment around you, especially moving parts.

07

Check

that all pieces and tooling are properly secured before operating.

08

Remove chuck keys, wrenches, and adjustment tools from machinery after use.

09

Work with a partner when appropriate.

Don't move heavy objects or support heavy pieces alone.

10

Pay attention.

Something that doesn't feel or sound right probably isn't.

11

Do not move equipment

from its designated place in the shop.

MINORS 07

Under 18? Bring a grownup.

01

Minors must be supervised at all times in the makerspace.

02

Minors may only use equipment if an adult who is trained on that equipment is present and actively supervising.

CONSUMABLES 08

USE WHAT'S HERE.

REPLENISH WHAT YOU DEPLETE.

01

Most consumables are your responsibility to supply. What's stocked in the shop (sandpaper, hardware, glue, dust masks, and similar) is available to use.

02

If you deplete a large quantity of shared consumables, consider replacing some or all of what you used, or making a cash donation.

03

If a machine consumable such as a saw blade or drill bit is damaged through misuse, you may be asked to contribute toward a replacement.

STORAGE 09

Don't leave things where they don't belong.

01

Stow materials, tools, extension cords, and scrap appropriately.

No tripping hazards. No tools at risk of damage.

02

Do not store any personal items inside or outside without permission.

Anything left without authorization becomes community property and may be disposed of.

CONDUCT 10

This is a shared workspace.

People here come from different backgrounds, skill levels, and working styles. Keep that in mind when you interact with others.

01

Be respectful of those around you. Avoid language or actions that would reasonably make others uncomfortable.

02

Intimidation, bullying, and harassment, including sexual harassment, will not be tolerated.

03

If you offer help, understand that some people prefer to work alone. If your offer is declined, accept it gracefully.

04

If someone tells you your work presents a safety concern, take it seriously. That's a community responsibility, not a personal criticism.

05

Communication matters:

If someone is making you uncomfortable, you can address it directly with them. If you need to raise a concern privately, speak with a board member. They'll help or connect you with the right person. Reports of misconduct can also be filed anonymously via the Code of Conduct Incident Report Form.

OPERATIONS 11

Everything else.

01

Problems with the facility, equipment, or another member:

Notify the board via Slack as soon as you notice them.

02

Classes and events:

Be courteous when events are happening. Check the calendar and plan noisy work around scheduled classes.

03

Volunteering:

Members are encouraged to give back however they can, cleaning an area, helping maintain equipment, joining board meetings.

04

Lost and found:

There's a shelf to the right of the ceramics room for abandoned or lost items. Items sitting for more than 14 days may be disposed of.

05

Visitors:

Members may bring friends and family for tours. If you bring someone in, you're responsible for their safety. Visitors do not touch power tools.

06

Donations:

Donated supplies, tools, and materials must go through the board. Things that show up unannounced will go to lost and found.

07

Closing the space:

If you're the last one out, shut off everything and lock up. The close-up procedure is posted near the door. This includes all tools and equipment, and the lights, except the one in the glassblowing area.

08

Late payment:

Members are required to follow the Late Payment Policy.

09

Changes to this document:

Our Code of Conduct may be updated at any time, with or without notice. Continued membership means agreement to the current version. It's your responsibility to stay current.
